Deputy (Jail)

Position: Deputy Jail

Salary: $18.13 per hour/43 hours per week ($40,538.68 annually)

**Montgomery County Government adopted the State of Tennessee’s Hybrid Retirement Plan to be effective January 1, 2017.  Any new full-time employee hired on or after January 1, 2017 will be required to enroll.  As a member of the Hybrid Plan, you are required to contribute at least 5% of your salary to the defined benefit portion of the Hybrid Plan. Contributions are made on a tax-deferred basis.



Maintains the safety, security, and welfare of individuals detained or charged with a crime.  Duties and responsibilities may include processing and preparing inmates for incarceration, transporting inmates, maintaining various logs and records, maintaining discipline and order, serving warrants, report writing, responding to inmate grievances, safely and securely monitor inmate workers, and other related duties.



The following duties are normal for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-Inclusive. other duties may be required and assigned.

  • In and out processing of inmates at the Montgomery County Jail.
  • Prepares work assignments for inmates relating to litter abatement of state and local highways of the County.
  • Conducts housing unit and cell inspections for contraband, safety, security, and sanitation.
  • Maintains required records, logs and written reports.
  • Transfers meals to housing units and supervises inmate food servers. Provides accounting for trays.
  • Performs daily searches on inmates returning from work assignments to minimize introduction of contraband and maximize the safety/security of inmates personnel, and the facility.
  • Checks the health and welfare of inmates by inspecting cell areas and remaining visually responsible for inmates. Conducts security checks per policy.
  • Maintains inmate discipline and order in the Jail or Workhouse. Stops violence to ensure safety and security of operations. Prosecutes inmates who commit crime while incarcerated.
  • Coordinates activities of inmates assigned to Jail work details and assigns inmates to other work details as approved by the Sheriff.
  • May perform various other duties if assigned as Jail Deputy or Work House Deputy.
  • Must be able and willing to work flexible hours, shifts and Holidays where needed.



High School Diploma or G.E.D is required.  A valid Tennessee Driver’s License is required.  Residency in Montgomery County is required if job requires an issued official vehicle, may otherwise live in an adjoining county within Tennessee if no vehicle is issued.

Physical Requirements:  Physical demand job requirements are at levels of those for active work.  Physical ability to operate a variety of weapons, tools, office machines, and other equipment associated with law enforcement and/or detention is required.  Physical ability to use body members to work, move, or carry objects or materials is required.  Physical ability to lift a minimum of 40 pounds from the floor to 76 inches in height and exert enough force necessary to drag 150 pounds for 50 feet.

Data Conception:  Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, technical, structural, or compositional characteristics; whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards of data, people, or things.

Interpersonal Communication:  Requires the ability to speak and signal others in order to convey ideas or information, and to hear the spoken word and process a signal.  Examples include giving or receiving orders, or giving directions or information to coworkers.

Language Ability:  Requires the ability to read a variety of informational documentation, directions, instructions, and methods and procedures.  The ability to write reports with proper format, punctuation, spelling, grammar, and all parts of speech is required.  The ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control, and confidence using correct English and a well-modulated voice is required.

Intelligence:  Requires the ability to learn and understand basic principles and techniques, to make independent judgments in absence of supervision and to acquire knowledge of topics related to the job.

Verbal Aptitude:  Requires the ability to record and deliver information to citizens, supervisors, and elected officials, to explain procedures and policies and to follow verbal and written instructions, guidelines and objectives.

Numerical Aptitude:  Requires the ability to add and subtract totals, multiply and divide, determine percentages, determine time and weight and utilize statistical inference.

Form/Spatial Aptitude:  Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape.

Motor Coordination:  Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using automated equipment.

Manual Dexterity:  Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, office equipment, control knobs, switches, etc.  The ability to use one hand for twisting or turning motion while coordinating the other hand with different activities is required.  Average levels of eye/hand/foot coordination are required at minimum.

Interpersonal Temperament:  Requires the ability to interact with diverse audiences beyond giving and receiving instructions; such as in interpreting departmental policies and procedures.  Ability to perform under considerable stress when confronted with a life-threatening emergency is required.


Has general knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the County and law enforcement practices as they pertain to the performance of duties relating to the job of Deputy Sheriff/Jail Division. Has general knowledge of law enforcement practices as necessary in the completion of daily responsibilities. Knows how to keep abreast of any changes in policy, methods, computer operations, equipment needs, etc. as they pertain to departmental operations and activities. Is able to effectively communicate and interact with supervisors, members of the general public and all other groups involved in the activities of the department. Is able to assemble information and make written reports and documents in a concise, clear and effective manner. Has good organizational, human relations, and technical skills. Is able to use independent judgment and work with little direct supervision when necessary. Has the ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply regulations, procedures, and related information. Has considerable knowledge of the terminology, principles, and methods utilized within the department. Has the mathematical ability to handle required calculations.
