Minimum Requirements

Job Description

The Coordinator of Student Affairs Publications and Marketing reports to the Director of Student Affairs Programs and Assessment. The Coordinator has primary responsibility for design and production of Student Affairs publications, marketing and promotions and multimedia. Assists with division communications, and educates/advises the student-run newspaper and manages related activities.

Founded in 1927, the school is named after former Tennessee Governor Austin Peay, a Clarksville native. Austin Peay is a four-year public, doctoral-level university, with six colleges and four Chairs of Excellence. Austin Peay’s strategic plan focuses on five goals that will guide the University through the next 10 years. The five goals are growing enrollment, building student success, sustaining University growth, expanding diversity and enhancing communication.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

-Create, design, and manage multiple print and digital Student Affairs materials and publications.
-Collaborate with Student Affairs staff to conceptualize and produce various publications by assisting in the development and integration of consistent design themes across mediums. Ability to develop multiple design concepts for consideration as needed.
-Guide Student Affairs publications through concept, design, approvals, as appropriate. Consult with Public Relations and Marketing Office to coordinate and manage Student Affairs projects for approval and publication.
-Work with vendors to obtain cost estimates for projects within quality specifications, financial constraints and time schedule for projects.
-Oversee the production of printed materials, working with on-campus and off-campus print vendors.
-Evaluate effectiveness of publications/marketing activities for the division through analytics, distribution and related methods.
- Research design and technological trends to help ensure publications, website and social media are current and effective in reaching target audiences.
-Implement advertising sales strategies that adapt with changing environments and support print and multimedia publications.
-Monitor, update and enhance Student Affairs and Student Publications web pages and work with staff for accuracy and effectiveness of web content. Train staff and evaluate division websites to align with university standards.
-Create and coordinate social media communications.
-Advise student newspaper staff on all facets of print and digital media, business and marketing activities, circulation, and design and production.
-Educate student staff on news journalism concepts, design using InDesign, legal practices, multimedia journalism, ethics, decision making, planning, AP Style, and production. Stay abreast of industry standards.
-Provide regular feedback and publication critiques on student digital and traditional media.
-Organize and submit entries for student journalism contests.
-Recruit students to join newspaper staff.
-Manage training and staff development for student staff in design, writing, editing, reporting, story development, press ethics and responsibilities, leadership development, and practical skills.
-Coordinate alumni outreach and maintain alumni database.
-Conduct appropriate department assessment.
-Work efficiently and professionally in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
-Comply with expectations for staff in the Division of Student Affairs and with all University policies and guidelines for employees.

Essential Functions

-Demonstrated experience creating and publishing using Adobe suite including InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator, and ability to efficiently operate a MAC.
-Experience relevant to managing student-run print and multimedia.
-Ability to edit and update web pages using OUCampus and WordPress.
-Knowledge of various aspects of media production including, but not limited to, news writing, photography, video design, website development, advertising, and digital journalism.
-Understanding of work with all media venues.
-Knowledge of AP Style, news release distribution, and press release preparation.
-Ability to understand target markets, positioning, segmentation and branding.
-Ability to translate market research into marketing plans and advertising campaigns.
-Ability to effectively use sound financial practices for advertising and business activities.
-Broad understanding of marketing within higher education.
-Ability to effectively teach basic operation of newspaper design, journalism, ethics, pre-press and production including but not limited to news writing, editing, layout, photo editing, cutline and headline writing and website content and maintenance.
-Ability to effectively apply current press law to student publications at state institutions, including knowledge of and respect for the legal rights of student editors.
-Ability to coordinate travel and travel with students to workshops, contests, and conferences.
-Ability to effectively use current journalistic standards of professionalism and ethics.
