Job Description

PRIMARY FUNCTION OF JOB The General Manager provides leadership and direction on all aspects of the Clarksville site and ensures that production outputs are achieved in an efficient and cost-effective manner while continuously improving both safety and environmental performance. As GM you develop and ensure the execution of appropriate measures and targets to allow the business to meet and exceed required performance in all areas of the business. The role also ensures there are appropriate systems and processes in place to minimize the risk of injury, downtime and damage to the people and assets at Nyrstar Clarksville.

KEY RESULT AREAS

  • Developing & Implementation of operational strategies for the site ;
  • Ensure that financial targets for the site is achieved;
  • Sound planning and processes put place for the management of significant Capital Projects over the next 1-2 years to lead to those projects being successfully carried out and meeting budgets;
  • Setting and meeting of safety and environmental requirements and targets;
  • Ensure effective people management and development to enable improvements in the levels of employee engagement.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Safety, Health & Environment:  

  • Provide safety and environmental leadership to promote a culture of zero harm at Nyrstar Clarksville. This includes having a commitment to demonstrate leadership in safety, health and the environment.
  • Ensure the Health, Hygiene, Safety, Injury Management and Environment objectives are incorporated into all aspects of planning and work systems for the site;
  • Establishing a proactive approach to identify and eliminate any health, safety or environmental hazards and potential incidents;
  • Creating a culture which leads to work being conducted in accordance with the relevant Company Policies and statutory legislation relating to both the environment and occupational health and safety;
  • Ensure that safety and environmental incidents are reported as required and that investigations are carried out in a timely manner with actions followed up and implemented;
  • Ensure that the site's Injury Management System procedures are followed in the Departments to support the Injury Management System policies, procedures and legislation requirements; and
  • Demonstrating and instilling commitment to health, safety, environmental responsibility, sustainable development, and Nyrstar’s Life Saving Rules and the Code of Business Conduct through the delivery of actions and initiatives.

Production:

  • Develop, implement and continually monitor and review production strategies and targets and to make necessary changes to meet changing requirements;
  • Creating the desire within the Production departments meet and exceed KPI’s, and identify key projects to allow improvements;
  • Ensure that communication and delivery of commitments between departments and plant areas allows all areas of the site to perform well; and
  • Ensure that production plans and schedules align with business requirements.

Asset Management:

  • Improve asset reliability through close interaction with asset manager to ensure best practice is utilised;
  • Ensure asset management, maintenance and production priorities are aligned; and • Provide oversight for the development of Capital plans.

Financial

  • Put into place the required financial planning processes;
  • With the Finance Manage do business and financial forecasting; and
  • Ensures cost control and variance analysis is undertaken.

People Management:

  • Ensures continual leadership development and strategic career planning is in place to identify and fill key roles and ensures smooth succession planning;
  • Ensures that planning processes are in place for people management; • Ensures that systems are in place for effective and timely performance feedback processes for all employees;
  • Ensures that the sites comply with all employment related legislation including equal opportunity, anti-discrimination, affirmative action, disability discrimination, and the Workplace Relations Act. This also includes compliance with company policies and the provisions of industrial awards and agreements; and
  • Overall responsibility to manage and enhance performance of the teams, and dealing appropriately with managers and other staff who are not performing the required level of performance.

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS (formal certifications, etc.)

Essential:

  • Master degree in Engineering (Chemical, Metallurgy or Mechanical/Electrical) or equivalent significant operational experience; and
  • 15+ years operational experience in senior production roles preferably in metal smelting or similar heavy industry; and • Experience in managing projects and leading others to accomplish difficult goals.

Desirable:

  • Post Graduate qualifications in management; and/or Understanding of the zinc manufacturing sector or a similar heavy industrial environment.
