Deputy – Jail

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The scope of this job is to provide emergency response.

The responsibilities of this job are associated with the industry, custody, or treatment of prisoners; and the safety and security of the facility.

The general duties at this grade are

  1. to perform, under general supervision, work of considerable difficulty and responsibility along special technical or supervisory lines in office, business, or fiscal administration, or comparable subordinate technical work in a professional, scientific, or technical field, requiring in either case
    1. considerable specialized or supervisory training and experience;
    2. comprehensive working knowledge of a special and complex subject matter, procedure, or practice, or of the principles of the profession, art, or science involved; and
    3. to a considerable extent the exercise of independent judgment;
  2. under immediate or general supervision, to perform somewhat difficult work requiring—
    1. professional, scientific, or technical training; and
    2. to a limited extent, the exercise of independent technical judgment; or
  3. to perform other work of equal importance, difficulty, and responsibility, and requiring comparable qualifications.

Notes: This position is supervised by a Corporal-Jail. This position involves duties associated with the industry, custody, or treatment of prisoners; and the safety and security of the facility; and to provide emergency response associated with those duties. Performs work of average difficulty and responsibility in dealing with persons under confinement and includes the care, custody, restraint, and general welfare of inmates detained at the Montgomery County Jail and Workhouse. Must possess, and maintain certification by the Tennessee Corrections Institute. Performance is reviewed through supervisory observation and discussion, review of work product, and results obtained.

Positions may require work on rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Duties are generally performed on an assigned shift at an assigned facility, but may continue beyond the end of shift, or become special work assignments on other shifts or at such times as directed to best fill the efficient and effective operations of the Sheriff’s Office.

Residency in Montgomery County is required if issued a vehicle. If not assigned a vehicle or the assigned vehicle remains in Montgomery County at an approved location, then residency no further than a contiguous Tennessee county or a Tennessee residence within 60 minutes travel to this Office is required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Any tasks or activities consistent with the job title, general description, and education, training, and experience.
  • Accurately prepare records and reports.
  • Assists in the training of personnel.
  • Knowledge and practical application of Sheriff’s Office Policies, Procedures, and Guidelines Manual.
  • Participates in Sheriff’s Office recruitment and community relations activities as directed.
  • Provides courtroom testimony.

  • Ability to use a variety of office and computer equipment and related software to complete job requirements.

  • Knowledge of applicable state statutes, laws, rules, and regulations to perform the duties and responsibilities associated with the job.
  • Skill in the proper, efficient, and safe utilization or operation of any commonly used or issued equipment associated with the job. E.g. – vehicles, computers, firearms, radios, telephones, etc.

Minimum Education, Training, and Experience

High School diploma or GED is required.

A valid driver’s license is required.

Must possess, and maintain certification by the Tennessee Corrections Institute.

Experience, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job is preferred, but not required
