Upon employment as a part time Bus Operator, you typically have a steady schedule of 25-29 hours per week determined by the needs of the department. Generally, full-time positions become available frequently. This timeline provides part time Bus Operators the opportunity to become acclimated with the department, routes, and the community prior to gaining full-time employment. Part time Bus Operators have the opportunity to advance based on seniority and performance. Full-time Bus Operators historically have some flexibility in selecting a preferred schedule based on seniority. Schedules change every quarter. TYPICAL CLASS ESSENTIAL DUTIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)

Drives a bus for the purpose of transporting riders to applicable locations, including special events.

Performs pre- and post bus inspection activities to identify maintenance needs.

Performs routine cleaning activities.

Sells tickets and collects fares.

Prepares and maintains a variety of operational records and reports.

Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (positions in this class typically require):
High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.); or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS (positions in this class typically require):
Licensing Requirements:

Commercial Driver's License with P Endorsement

KNOWLEDGE (position requirements at entry):
Knowledge of:

Safe driving principles and practices;

Cleaning principles and practices;

Basic maintenance inspection principles;

Cash handling techniques;

Customer service principles;

Recordkeeping principles.

SKILLS:
Skill in:

Customer service principles;

Reading maps to follow routes;

Conducting bus inspections and recognizing defects;

Completing forms, reports, and/or logs;

Performing cleaning duties;

Handling cash;

Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pound of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Incumbents may be subjected to fumes, odors, and extreme temperatures.
